Neuropsychological Testing

A private psychology practice offering therapy and neuropsychological testing in Rhode Island and online.

PVD Psychological Associates offers neuropsychological, psychological, and achievement testing for individuals ages 7 and older.

Neuropsychological Evaluations and Psychological Testing

The “neuro” component of neuropsychological testing refers to the the evaluation of neurological domains such as executive function, learning, and memory. The “psychological” component refers to testing oriented around clinical psychology such as the assessment of behavior, social skills, mood and anxiety.

We offer comprehensive neuropsychological testing as well as more narrowly focused testing, depending on your interests and needs. Comprehensive testing takes place in person, but there are components of testing that can be completed online and from the comfort of your home.

Results from a neuropsychological evaluation can provide detailed information about an individual’s cognitive functioning and academic skills, including strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, it can help to provide clinical information to assist in making an accurate diagnosis and facilitate treatment planning and recommendations. The following areas may be assessed:

  • Attention & Concentration
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Emotional & Behavioral Functioning
  • Executive Functioning
  • High Functioning Aspergers
  • Intellectual Assessment
  • Language & Communication
  • Memory & Learning
  • Personality Structure
  • Planning & Organizing
  • Problem Solving
  • Processing Speed
  • Visual & Spatial Perception

Achievement (Academic) Testing

This type of testing focuses on academic strengths and weaknesses and is used to make diagnoses of learning disabilities as well as giftedness. Academic testing is an important tool that will help you or your child get appropriate accommodations (in a specific academic subject or all of them).
The following diagnoses will be assessed:
  • Auditory Processing Disorder
  • Dyslexia
  • Dysgraphia
  • Dyscalculia
  • Giftedness
  • Language Processing Disorders
  • Nonverbal Learning Disorders

Evaluation Process

Neuropsychological testing, cognitive evaluations, psychological testing, and academic testing all require a thorough knowledge of all aspects of your background and history. Each assessment will begin with an intake which will inform the testing scheduled. You will be asked to provide information about your medical, psychological, educational, and social history. We also will discuss your goals for the testing such as the referral question as well as any questions you would like to have answered.

If you are seeking testing for your child, you and your child will participate in the intake process. We may also contact your child’s school to gather information and data about their learning, behavior, and presentation at school.

You and/or your child will be asked to answer questions, fill out questionnaires and/or rating scales, and solve problems and complete various tasks, depending on the objective of the evaluation. Results will be interpreted and shared through an evaluation report. The report will also offer recommendations for school and/or treatment planning.

Follow-up feedback sessions are offered to review the testing findings and recommendations
